Make Christmas memories on the Copperhill Holiday Train. Choose from three Friday departures for a full-day journey through the Hiwassee River Gorge, followed by holiday shopping and dining in Copperhill and McCaysville.
Make a full day of mountain scenery and holiday shopping aboard the Copperhill Holiday Train. The 94-mile round trip departs from Delano, Tennessee, travels through the Hiwassee River Gorge and over the remarkable Hiwassee Loop, then continues to the twin towns of Copperhill, Tennessee, and McCaysville, Georgia.
During the 90-minute layover, explore local boutiques, shop for Christmas gifts, and enjoy lunch or seasonal treats before reboarding the vintage train for the return to Delano. Climate-controlled seating ranges from Coach and Crown Class to Lounge, Observation, and Dome options.

- The departure location for the Copperhill Special is 1 to 2 hours from Chattanooga and well worth the drive. Please allow yourself enough time to arrive before departure.
- Important: Local police actively monitor speed limits, so ensure you stay within posted speed limits to avoid any fines.

- Summary: The Hiwassee Loop, a railway engineering feat constructed in 1898, is located along the Hiwassee River near the North Carolina border in Polk County, Tennessee. Built by the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern Railroad to replace switchbacks around Bald Mountain, it significantly reduced travel time between Marietta, Georgia, and Knoxville, Tennessee. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad later absorbed it. Yes. Our coaches are both air-conditioned and heated to ensure passenger comfort in every season.

Dome and Observation seating are not recommended as they require climbing stairs.Our historic railcars were built before modern accessibility standards.
While we cannot accommodate wheelchairs on board, guests who can board the train and occupy a standard seat are welcome.

Yes! Trains operate rain or shine. All coaches are enclosed and climate-controlled for your comfort.
8. Why Are Passengers Asked to Swap Seats at the Midway Point?
Because the train does not turn around, guests are invited to switch sides at the halfway point so that everyone can enjoy both views of the route.
9. Can We Move Around on the Train?
Yes, passengers are welcome to move about the train during the trip. Please be cautious when walking between cars while the train is in motion.
10. Why Can’t the Train Be Boarded at the L&N Depot & Museum?
The CSX mainline near the depot is restricted to freight service only.
Our excursions operate on the historic “Old Line” that branches off near Wetmore.11. What is the Purpose of TVRM?

All Chattanooga-based trains depart from Grand Junction Station unless otherwise noted.

Smoke & Cinders.20. How do we split payment and still sit together?

CANCELLATION POLICY: All sales are final, and no refunds are issued.
However, for added flexibility, we now offer Trip Protection. For an additional 15% of your ticket price, you may cancel your trip up to 24 hours before departure and receive a refund minus the Trip Protection fee. A great train excursion. Beautiful views of river, mountains, TVA power facilities and Hiawassee Loop. We rode in the observation car at the rear of the train. Conductor and staff very knowledgeable and provided almost continuous narration of history of the railroad and the surrounding area. A must for railfans and history buffs. Our convention group of 75 took a daylong chartered ride on the Copperhill Special in October 2016. We departed from Etowah and rode through the mountains to the old mining town of Copperhill, Tennessee, where we were on our own for lunch. After the two-hour stop we returned to Etowah. We had a wonderful experience viewing the fabulous scenery and riding on the old train. The conductor pointed out places of interest and even gave us a banjo serenade in the afternoon. Coffee and snacks were available on the train. Because we were the only group on the train we were able to move from car to car and visit with each other. A most relaxing day!
