Step inside our active restoration shop, where historic locomotives and railcars are rebuilt and maintained by hand.

Please note: This is a working shop—similar to visiting an auto restoration garage—with tools, parts, and real projects underway. This is where railroad preservation happens every day.

Guest option: Visitors who prefer not to participate in the restoration shop tour are welcome to remain onboard the train during this stop.

Reboard the train for the approximately 15-minute return ride, featuring additional narration and photo opportunities as you head back to Grand Junction Depot.

The Missionary Ridge Local is a historic urban rail line, not a long-distance scenic excursion. The focus of this experience is railroad operations, history, and behind-the-scenes access rather than expansive natural views.

What is the Missionary Ridge Local? The Missionary Ridge Local is a 65-minute narrated train ride departing from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The experience combines two short train rides with a live turntable demonstration and a guided visit inside TVRM’s active restoration shop — a behind-the-scenes look at working railroad preservation that you won’t find on most heritage rail excursions. The route crosses four historic bridges, passes through a pre–Civil War hand-dug tunnel, and travels through Chattanooga’s rail corridor with live narration throughout.

How long is the experience, and how long is the train actually moving? The full experience runs approximately 65 minutes. The train is in motion for about 30 minutes total — roughly 15 minutes each direction. The remaining time is spent at the turntable for the live demonstration and inside the restoration shop for a guided visit. Both are included in the ticket price and are considered core parts of the experience, not waiting time.

What happens during the stop in the middle of the ride? The locomotive must be turned for the return trip. While that happens, guests are invited off the train for two things: a live turntable demonstration showing how the 1916-built turntable rotates locomotives, and a guided visit inside TVRM’s working restoration shop where active preservation projects are underway. Guests who prefer to remain onboard are welcome to do so.

What will I see along the route? This is a historic urban rail experience, not a mountain or river-gorge route. The draw is Chattanooga’s railroad infrastructure and heritage: four historic bridges, a pre-Civil War hand-dug tunnel, active rail yards, and preserved rolling stock. Live narration from the crew puts the history in context throughout the ride. For panoramic scenery, the Hiwassee Loop and Copperhill Special are the right choices — but for first-time visitors and families looking for an engaging, educational experience in under 90 minutes, the Local is TVRM’s most popular ride for good reason.

What locomotive will be pulling the train? Departures are operated by diesel locomotives depending on availability. When steam locomotives — including No. 4501 or No. 630 — are confirmed for a departure, that is noted on the booking calendar. Steam departures are popular and tend to book faster. If riding behind a specific locomotive matters to you, check the calendar for confirmed steam dates before booking.

Is the restoration shop safe for children? Yes. The restoration shop visit is a guided, family-friendly experience designed to be safe and engaging for guests of all ages. The shop is an active working environment, so the visit is guided rather than self-directed — guests stay with the group and crew members are present throughout.

Is this a good experience for young children? Yes — the Missionary Ridge Local is one of TVRM’s most family-friendly products. At 65 minutes it’s manageable for young children who couldn’t handle a full-day excursion. The turntable demonstration and restoration shop visit tend to be especially engaging for kids. Infants under 2 ride free.

Where does the train depart from? The Missionary Ridge Local departs from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum main campus at 4119 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421. This is TVRM’s primary Chattanooga location — not to be confused with the Delano, TN campus where the Hiwassee Loop and Copperhill Special depart.

Is food available? Snacks and drinks are available at the Depot Deli prior to your trip. The deli is located at the Grand Junction Depot on the museum grounds. Note that the deli may have limited hours — if dining is part of your plan, arrive with time to spare before your departure.

Do I need to book tickets in advance? Advance booking is recommended, especially for steam locomotive departures and weekend dates, which fill faster. Walk-up availability is not guaranteed. The Local runs multiple departures per day on operating days, so same-day booking is sometimes possible on weekdays, but planning ahead is the safer approach.

What happens if we arrive late? Trains depart on schedule and cannot be held for late arrivals. Plan to arrive at least 20–30 minutes before your departure to allow time for parking and check-in.

Are strollers allowed? Strollers are permitted but must be foldable and stored during the ride due to narrow aisles in the historic railcars.

What if I have mobility limitations or need accessibility accommodations? Some railcars require climbing steps to board. Because these historic railcars predate ADA standards, wheelchairs cannot be accommodated onboard. Guests who can self-board and use a standard seat are welcome.
