STEP INTO RAILROADING’S PAST THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Step Into Railroading’s Past This Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend is almost here, and Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) is rolling out a slate of classic rail excursions that blend nostalgia, scenic beauty, and unforgettable experiences for all ages. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing daytime adventure, a family outing, or a charming date night, TVRM has a ride for you.
Four Incredible Rides, One Memorable Weekend
🚂 Missionary Ridge Local — Featuring NC&StL 710
Built in 1950, our diesel-electric GP7 locomotive #710 celebrates 75 years of continuous evolution. Originally operated by the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway, #710 survived a merger, a wreck, and even Amtrak service before coming home to TVRM. It’s the oldest diesel in our fleet, making every run a true experience in American railroad legacy.
This short ride from our Grand Junction Depot takes riders through a pre-Civil War tunnel and includes a turntable demonstration and a visit to our restoration shop.
Duration: ~65 minutes
FAQ 1: Is the Missionary Ridge Local good for children? Yes! It’s our most family-friendly ride with multiple departures each day.
Copperhill Special — Scenic East Tennessee Ride
Want to escape into the foothills of the Appalachians? The Copperhill Special departs from Delano, TN and travels alongside creeks and wooded slopes for a relaxing full-day round-trip excursion. Ideal for those looking to savor Tennessee’s natural beauty.
Duration: ~9 hours (includes layover in Copperhill)
FAQ 2: Is food available during this ride? Yes, lunch options are available in Copperhill, and you’re welcome to bring a picnic for the train.
Hiwassee Loop — The Gorge Like You’ve Never Seen
The Hiwassee Loop offers a ride along the stunning Hiwassee River Gorge, featuring a rare railroad spiral loop that climbs over itself as it ascends the mountains. This route is a favorite among photographers and nature lovers alike.
Duration: ~4.5 hours round trip
FAQ 3: Is the loop wheelchair accessible? Yes, please contact TVRM ahead of your visit to make arrangements.
Dinner Train — Romance, Rail, and Cuisine
Nothing says date night quite like a vintage dining car rolling through Chattanooga at sunset. Our Dinner Train features a seasonal menu prepared on board, tables, and timeless ambiance. Dress up or come casual, but bring your appetite and sense of wonder.
Duration: ~2 hours
Why TVRM?
TVRM doesn’t just operate train rides — we preserve rail heritage in motion. As a non-profit educational organization, each ticket helps us restore locomotives, maintain track infrastructure, and educate future generations about the significance of the railroad in American history.
“The Dinner Train experience transported us back in time. A perfect blend of comfort and history.” — Guest Review
A Ride Through Time
With the 68th anniversary of the NC&StL Railway’s merger into the Louisville & Nashville Railroad occurring on August 30, 2025, there’s no better time to ride behind the very locomotive that lived through it.
