Executive Vice President Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum
The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM), located in Chattanooga TN, was established in 1961 and is the premier visitor destination that preserves and conveys the rich history of railroading in the southeastern United States. Among its several regular excursions, TVRM’s passenger trains run on a historic route, which includes Missionary Ridge Tunnel, completed in 1858 and on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the passenger excursions, TVRM preserves railroad equipment to educate visitors about the importance of this industry and how it helped create the modern world in which we live.
The Board of Directors of this 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization has just completed a significant strategic planning process and is looking for an executive leader to grow within an identified succession plan to lead the team forward. The Executive Vice-President (EVP) is a new position, created by the Board within the planning process to both lead and support the talented teams responsible for the attraction, passenger and museum businesses. Leading within the organization’s vision, mission, and values, the EVP has operational, financial and cultural responsibilities for the teams for which they are responsible and will work in tandem with the Finance and Administration team and the President to fulfill the strategic objectives of the organization. Major responsibilities of the EVP include performance management, communication inside and outside the organization, and the implementation of the priority initiatives within the strategic plan.
The ideal candidate will have a experience in leading strategic planning implementation in a not-for-profit organization, familiarity with the railroad regulatory environment and will have a Master’s degree in business, public administration, or non-profit management. Required qualifications include a minimum of ten years of management and leadership experience in either a passenger rail excursion or related customer experience business, with the ability to train with and prepare for succession within the executive team. Other requirements include strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to read and interpret financial statements and budgets and experience with safety and risk management responsibilities.

General description: The Executive Vice-President is a full-time leadership position that has operational, financial, and cultural responsibility for the attraction, passenger, and museum businesses of Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM)
Specific job responsibilities
- Leads teams in accordance with the organization’s vision, mission and values
- Assures excellent quality visitor experience at all passenger and museum operations
- Direct responsibility for three to five subordinate managers/directors in the following areas: safety, museum / guest services, exhibitions / education, and operations support
- Manages financial performance of responsible areas including revenue and expense management to budget, dashboard/performance metrics, and annual budget creation
- Working with the Finance and Administration team, assists in the recruiting, selection, hiring and training of new employees in responsible areas.
- Manages performance of all employees in responsible areas (often through subordinate managers) through communication of expectations and all coaching, counseling, or discipline.
- Working with the President and peer leaders, implements priority initiatives identified within the organization’s strategic plan
- Collaborates with peer leaders across the organization, ensuring clear communication and consistent performance
- May represent the organization with internal and external stakeholders, including within the community.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to train with and prepare for succession within the executive team
- Minimum of 10 years previous management and leadership experience in either attraction, museum, passenger rail excursion, or related customer experience business
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to interact positively at all levels within the organization and community
- Ability to read and interpret financial statements and budgets
- Experience with safety and risk management responsibilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in business, public administration, or non-profit management
- Experience leading implementation of an organization’s strategic plan
- Familiarity with or current/previous resident in Chattanooga
- Experience working or volunteering with not-for-profit organizations
- Familiarity with the railroad regulatory environment
